mutable fire · ruled by Jupiter

Sagittarius

Sagittarius is mutable fire, and the tradition reads it as the sign of meaning: the search for a bigger picture that the details can be arranged inside. It is associated with travel, belief, teaching and an optimism that survives most evidence. Its difficulty is the follow-through and the tact, since a sign this committed to the truth as it sees it is not naturally careful about delivery.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What mutable fire means

fire: Acts first and thinks about it after. Warm, direct, and impatient with anything slow.

mutable: Adapts to things. The end of each season, associated with flexibility and with a tendency to scatter.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Sagittarius from the other two fire signs.

Six ways to have Sagittarius

Being “an Sagittarius” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Sagittarius

An identity built around freedom and the pursuit of something larger. Associated with optimism, generosity and genuine intellectual appetite, and with a restlessness that makes long commitments feel like walls. The cost is over-promising: the enthusiasm is real at the time and the diary is not.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Sagittarius

Needs room, and becomes noticeably difficult without it. Read as cheerful, resilient and quick to move past a bad mood, with the traditional caution that moving past it and dealing with it are not the same, and this Moon strongly prefers the former.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Sagittarius

Comes across as open, enthusiastic and slightly larger than the room. First impressions tend to be of somebody friendly and unguarded, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with an easy manner that gets people talking quickly.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Sagittarius

Thinks in principles and large patterns, and is impatient with the small print. Associated with teaching, storytelling and genuine breadth, with the traditional caution being confident inaccuracy: the shape of the argument is right and the specifics were not checked.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Sagittarius

Attracted to what expands the world. Read as warm, generous and honest to a degree that occasionally costs it, with a real need for independence inside a relationship. The traditional caution is restlessness once the discovery phase is over.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Sagittarius

Acts on enthusiasm and at scale. Read as adventurous, physically confident and inclined to commit before the details are known, with a temper that is loud, brief and startlingly blunt. Effort here needs to believe in something before it will start.

Drive, anger, appetite, and how you go after what you want

The rest of the chart in Sagittarius

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Sagittarius

Jupiter rules Sagittarius, so this is expansion with no brake on it. Associated with travel, belief, teaching and an optimism that survives evidence to the contrary. The traditional caution is promising more than one life has room for.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Sagittarius

The work is with belief. Read as somebody who cannot accept a philosophy because it is comforting, who tests what they are told, and who arrives at conviction slowly and then keeps it for a very long time.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Sagittarius

Roughly 1981 to 1988. Disruption in belief. Read as a generation sceptical of inherited doctrine and unusually willing to assemble its own, borrowing from wherever it finds something that holds.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Sagittarius

Roughly 1970 to 1984. The ideal is the search itself. Associated with a generation that went looking for meaning across traditions rather than within one, and with a susceptibility to anybody who appeared to have found it.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Sagittarius

Roughly 1995 to 2008. Power through belief. Associated with a cohort that watched religion and ideology become the visible fault line, and that is unusually alert to who is allowed to say what is true.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Sagittarius

Growth towards meaning and towards trusting your own conclusion. Associated with moving past the endless gathering of information and into saying what you actually think it adds up to.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Sagittarius

The comfortable retreat is into the answer you already have. Read as a well-worn philosophy that explains everything and is almost never tested against anything.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Sagittarius

The sore point is meaning, and whether anything you believe would survive being examined. The usefulness is an honest teacher who does not claim more certainty than they have.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Sagittarius

What is not apologised for is the opinion. Associated with a refusal to hold the acceptable belief, and with a bluntness that reliably arrives before the tact does.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Sagittarius

Read as ease found in distance and in meaning: travel, study, and a life with some larger reason attached to it.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Sagittarius

Care is given as freedom and perspective: encouragement to go, and a larger frame put around whatever has gone wrong. It is received as not being fenced in.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Sagittarius

The strategy is to widen the frame: solve it by seeing what it is an instance of, and by refusing to accept that the problem is as local as it looks.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Sagittarius

What is wanted is room and a shared direction: a partner who is going somewhere, and a relationship that does not require staying still.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Sagittarius

The devotion is to the search: the study, the belief, the journey. Associated with periods of real single-mindedness separated by long stretches of restlessness.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Sagittarius

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
