cardinal earth · ruled by Saturn

Capricorn

Capricorn is cardinal earth, ruled by Saturn, and the tradition reads it as the sign of structure and consequence. It is associated with ambition, discipline, patience and a dry humour that surprises people who only know the reputation. Its difficulty is that a sign organised around responsibility tends to take on more of it than was ever asked, and to treat rest as something that must be earned.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What cardinal earth means

earth: Deals in what can be touched, counted and relied on. Steady, and slow to be impressed.

cardinal: Starts things. The first sign of each season, associated with initiative and with an impatience for the follow-through.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Capricorn from the other two earth signs.

Six ways to have Capricorn

Being “an Capricorn” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Capricorn

An identity built on competence and on having actually done the thing. Associated with patience, realism and an ambition that does not need to announce itself, and with a seriousness that often arrived far too early in life. The tradition holds that Capricorn ages in reverse: heavier at twenty than at sixty.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Capricorn

Manages feeling rather than expressing it. Read as reliable in a crisis, uncomfortable with needing anything, and privately convinced that having needs is a weakness. The Moon is in detriment here, which the tradition reads as emotional self-sufficiency that was not entirely voluntary.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Capricorn

Comes across as composed, capable and hard to read. First impressions tend to be of somebody older and more serious than they are, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with a reserve that is often mistaken for coldness by people who have not got past it.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Capricorn

Thinks structurally and does not speak until it is sure. Associated with rigour, long concentration and excellent judgement about what is realistic, with the traditional caution being a slowness to voice an idea that is already better than most of the ones being said aloud.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Capricorn

Takes commitment seriously and shows affection through reliability. Read as loyal, undemonstrative and slow to open, with a preference for what lasts over what is exciting. The traditional caution is treating a relationship as another responsibility to discharge.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Capricorn

Mars is exalted in Capricorn, so this is effort at its most effective: disciplined, patient and aimed at a result. Read as stamina, cold competence under pressure, and anger that is controlled, delayed and extremely precise when it finally arrives.

Drive, anger, appetite, and how you go after what you want

The rest of the chart in Capricorn

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Capricorn

Jupiter is in fall in Capricorn, which the tradition frames as weight rather than misfortune: growth that has to be earned in instalments. Associated with success that arrives late and then holds, and with an instinctive suspicion of anything that came too easily.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Capricorn

Saturn rules Capricorn, so this is limitation in its own house, and the tradition reads it as strength rather than hardship. Associated with discipline that needs no supervision, ambition that plans in decades, and a seriousness that arrived early.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Capricorn

Roughly 1988 to 1996. Disruption in institutions. Associated with a cohort that came of age watching structures fail, and that is pragmatic rather than idealistic about what should replace them.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Capricorn

Roughly 1984 to 1998. The ideal is the structure. Read as a cohort that believed in institutions and in achievement and then watched both dissolve. Disillusion is the shared experience here rather than the exception.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Capricorn

Roughly 2008 to 2024. Power through institutions. Read as a generation that came of age inside a financial and political crisis, and that treats the structures around it as things capable of failing.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Capricorn

Growth towards responsibility and towards the public role. Read as a movement out of the private world and into the one with consequences, structure and accountability in it.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Capricorn

The comfortable retreat is into work and control. Associated with taking on the responsibility rather than the feeling, and with competence used as somewhere to hide.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Capricorn

The sore point is authority and achievement, often measured against an early standard nobody could have met. The usefulness is a steady, undramatic reliability that other people quietly build on.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Capricorn

What is not apologised for is ambition. Associated with a refusal to pretend not to want the position, and with a lasting wariness of anybody who suggests you know your place.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Capricorn

Read as ease found in structure and in being responsible for something: a long project, a real position, and the satisfaction of having built it rather than been given it.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Capricorn

Care is given as provision and reliability rather than as warmth. It is received as somebody being there, on time, doing what they said, which the tradition reads as the tenderness this placement can actually accept.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Capricorn

The strategy is structural: build the system that prevents it, accept that this takes longer, and remain unimpressed by the quick fix.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Capricorn

What is wanted is commitment as a structure rather than as a mood: something built, maintained and taken seriously, often with a difference in age or standing that the tradition makes a point of.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Capricorn

The devotion is to the work and the position. Associated with sustained, unglamorous focus held over years, and with a private life kept small in order to protect it.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Capricorn

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
