fixed water · ruled by Pluto, and Mars traditionally

Scorpio

Scorpio is fixed water, which the tradition reads as feeling under enormous pressure and considerable control. It is associated with depth, privacy, power and whatever is being kept out of sight, and with an unusual tolerance for uncomfortable truths. Its difficulty is control itself: a sign this invested in not being caught off guard finds trust genuinely expensive.

Ruling planetPluto, and Mars traditionally

Modern astrology gives Scorpio to Pluto; traditional astrology gives it to Mars, which is still used as a co-ruler. Both readings are in circulation.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What fixed water means

water: Moves through feeling and attachment. Perceptive, guarded, and rarely willing to be watched while working something out.

fixed: Holds things. The middle of each season, associated with persistence and with a real difficulty changing course.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Scorpio from the other two water signs.

Six ways to have Scorpio

Being “an Scorpio” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Scorpio

An identity built around depth and self-possession. Associated with resilience, penetrating perception and total commitment to whatever it has chosen, and with a privacy that is not secretiveness so much as an unwillingness to be known on anybody else's schedule. The cost is that everything matters too much for anything to be casual.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Scorpio

Feels everything at full depth and shows almost none of it. Read as intensely attached, unusually good at sensing what is not being said, and slow to trust. The Moon is in fall here, which the tradition reads not as coldness but as feeling that has nowhere comfortable to sit.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Scorpio

Comes across as watchful, self-contained and slightly unreadable. First impressions tend to be of somebody with a presence that is noticed before it is understood, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with a steady gaze people find either compelling or unnerving.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Scorpio

Thinks investigatively and does not stop at the first answer. Associated with research, strategy and an instinct for what is being concealed, with the traditional caution being obsession: this mind does not put a subject down when it is finished with it.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Scorpio

Attracted completely or not at all. Read as loyal, intense and privately possessive, with a strong preference for one deep attachment over several pleasant ones. The traditional caution is jealousy, and the tradition is unusually direct that the issue is control rather than affection.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Scorpio

Mars is the traditional ruler here, so drive is at full strength and entirely under wraps. Read as stamina, strategic patience and an ability to wait a very long time for the right moment. Anger here is rarely displayed and rarely forgotten.

The rest of the chart in Scorpio

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Scorpio

Growth through what is not discussed. Read as an appetite for the hidden, real resilience in a crisis, and resources that arrive through other people rather than through earnings. The excess is intensity applied to things that did not require it.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Scorpio

The work is with control and with trust. Associated with a reluctance to be dependent on anyone, real endurance under pressure, and a long process of finding out that holding on tightly is not the same thing as being safe.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Scorpio

Roughly 1974 to 1981. Disruption in what is hidden. Associated with a cohort that pulled private subjects into public view, and with a shared ease discussing what the generation before it would not.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Scorpio

Roughly 1955 to 1970. The ideal is transformation. Associated with a cohort drawn to the hidden and the forbidden, to altered states, and to the conviction that what is buried has to be brought up.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Scorpio

Roughly 1983 to 1995. Pluto in the sign it rules in the modern scheme. Associated with a generation shaped by what could not be spoken about, and by the insistence that it be spoken about anyway.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Scorpio

Growth towards depth and towards sharing what is yours. Read as a movement away from comfort and possession and towards the more demanding exchange, which the tradition frames as weight rather than misfortune.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Scorpio

The comfortable retreat is into intensity and control. Associated with going deep, holding on, and treating suspicion as though it were diligence.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Scorpio

The sore point is trust and power, usually with something behind it that was never discussed. The usefulness is being unshockable, which is worth considerably more in a crisis than reassurance is.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Scorpio

What is not apologised for is intensity. Associated with a refusal to make desire or grief presentable, and with an instinct for whatever somebody is carefully not saying.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Scorpio

Read as ease found in depth rather than breadth: few people, told everything, and work that goes somewhere most work does not.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Scorpio

Care is given intensely and privately, as total loyalty to a small number of people. It is received as being trusted with what is not said anywhere else.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Scorpio

The strategy is investigative: find what is being left out. Associated with a real talent for the hidden variable and for the question nobody wanted asked.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Scorpio

What is wanted is total honesty and total loyalty, and the tradition notes that both will be tested. Read as a partnership that goes deep or does not hold your interest at all.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Scorpio

The devotion is total and private. Associated with an all or nothing concentration, and with a part of life deliberately not shown to anybody.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Scorpio

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
