Mars in astrology
Mars is the part of a chart that wants, and then does something about wanting. It governs energy, assertion, appetite and conflict, and the most useful question it answers is not whether you are aggressive but what your aggression looks like when it finally arrives.

What Mars means in a birth chart
Mars describes how you pursue something and how you fight when pursuit is refused. Every chart has one, so the question is never whether you have a temper but what form it takes: fast and spent, slow and retained, expressed directly, or routed through something else entirely.
It also governs plain physical drive, which the tradition ties to stamina, appetite and sex. A prominent Mars is not a warning. It describes someone whose default answer to a problem is to move at it.
Mars by sign
The sign is where the difference shows most clearly. In fire signs Mars is quick to start and quick to discharge, and rarely holds a grudge because it does not hold anything long. In earth it is slow, deliberate and extremely hard to stop once committed. In air it argues, and can mistake winning the point for settling the matter. In water it very often does not express directly at all, which is why water Mars placements are the ones most associated with anger arriving late and sideways.
Strength and difficulty
Mars rules Aries and, in traditional astrology, Scorpio. It is exalted in Capricorn, where the tradition reads it as effort that is disciplined into something that lasts: the placement of sustained work rather than of the first charge.
It is in detriment in Libra and Taurus and in fall in Cancer. Libra wants agreement and Mars does not; Taurus wants stillness; Cancer wants safety, and anger threatens it. Those placements describe drive that has to get past something before it can act, which often shows as a long fuse and a disproportionate bang.
Mars retrograde
Mars turns retrograde about every two years for two to two and a half months, and because it is the slowest of the personal planets those periods are conspicuous. The tradition associates them with stalled effort and with anger turning inward rather than outward.
In a birth chart, a retrograde Mars is read as drive that had to be reclaimed rather than assumed: often a slow start on asserting anything, and unusual staying power once it starts.
Mars in astrocartography
A birth chart says where Mars sits. An astrocartography map says where on Earth it was strongest at the moment you were born. Mars draws four lines across the world, one for each angle, and they do not mean the same thing as each other.

- No. Every chart has a Mars. The placement describes the form your assertion takes and how easily it reaches the surface, not how angry you are.
- What is a Mars return?
- Mars coming back to the degree it occupied at your birth, which happens roughly every two years. It is read as a natural restart on effort and ambition, in the same way a Saturn return is read as a restart on structure, and it is much less discussed because it is much less rare.
- Is Mars still the ruler of Scorpio?
- In traditional astrology, yes. Most modern astrologers give Scorpio to Pluto and keep Mars as its traditional co-ruler. Both readings are in circulation and neither is wrong; they answer slightly different questions.
