What Jupiter means in a birth chart

Jupiter is the appetite for more: more understanding, more territory, more possibility. It shows where you are naturally optimistic, where you find things easy, and where you extend yourself past the sensible point because extending has always worked before.

The classical name for it is the greater benefic, and read carelessly that turns into a promise of good fortune. Read properly it means Jupiter amplifies. On a well-placed part of the chart that is generosity and growth. On a difficult part it is the same energy making the difficulty bigger.

The twelve-year cycle

Jupiter takes about twelve years to go round the zodiac and roughly a year in each sign, which makes its return one of the more noticeable repeating rhythms in a chart: around twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six and forty-eight. The tradition reads a Jupiter return as an opening rather than a reckoning, which is what distinguishes it from the Saturn return.
