Houses are where astrology stops being vague. What each of the twelve governs, how to read an empty one, and why two chart calculators can disagree.

The 1st house
The first house begins at the Ascendant, which is the degree rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It is read as the way you meet the world: your manner, your bearing, the impression you make in the first minute, and the body you make it in.

The first, fourth, seventh and tenth, which begin at the four angles of the chart. Traditionally the strongest placements: a planet here acts, and is visible doing it.
What the 1st house covers
It is the house most often confused with the Sun sign and it answers a different question. The Sun describes what you are becoming; the first house describes what walks into the room. This is why a Sun sign so often reads as wrong to other people and right to the person themselves.
A planet in the first house is unusually conspicuous. The tradition reads it as colouring everything: a first-house Saturn reads as reserve that people notice immediately, and a first-house Jupiter as an expansiveness that arrives before any of the substance behind it.
Of the twelve, this is the one that most requires a birth time. The Ascendant moves a degree every four minutes and a whole sign every two hours, so an hour of error changes the answer.
What an empty 1st house means
Most houses in most charts have no planet in them, and it means nothing is wrong. An empty first house simply means the sign on the Ascendant and its ruler carry the reading on their own.
There are ten planets and twelve houses, so at least two are always empty and usually more like six. An empty house is the normal case, not a deficiency, and the sign on its cusp carries the reading instead.

Houses need a birth time. Signs do not.
Your Sun sign depends only on the date. Your houses depend on the horizon at the moment you were born, and the whole framework rotates by one house roughly every two hours. An hour of error moves half of it.
This is why a Sun-sign horoscope cannot use real houses. It counts them from your Sun sign instead, which is a genuine traditional technique called the solar chart and is an approximation. This site uses it for the daily, weekly and monthly readings and says so on each of them; the transit calculator uses your real houses when you give it a time, and withholds them when you do not.
