The 8th house

The eighth house covers what is shared rather than owned: joint finances, debt, inheritance, other people's money, and physical intimacy. The traditional name for it is death, and modern practice reads that mostly as transformation and endings.

What the 8th house covers

The through-line is that this house holds the things two people have between them that neither holds alone, and that most people are least willing to discuss plainly. Money and sex are in the same house because both are subjects where the honest conversation is the hard part.

Astra takes the death association more seriously than most sites do, because the death chart is the tool this site is built around. Even so, the tradition does not read an eighth-house placement as a prediction about dying, and neither does this site.

What an empty 8th house means

An empty eighth house is neither a long life nor a short one. It means these are not the chart's defining subjects.

There are ten planets and twelve houses, so at least two are always empty and usually more like six. An empty house is the normal case, not a deficiency, and the sign on its cusp carries the reading instead.

A planet in the 8th house

What a planet does here, one page each. A planet says what, the house says where in a life it happens.

Houses need a birth time. Signs do not.

Your Sun sign depends only on the date. Your houses depend on the horizon at the moment you were born, and the whole framework rotates by one house roughly every two hours. An hour of error moves half of it.

This is why a Sun-sign horoscope cannot use real houses. It counts them from your Sun sign instead, which is a genuine traditional technique called the solar chart and is an approximation. This site uses it for the daily, weekly and monthly readings and says so on each of them; the transit calculator uses your real houses when you give it a time, and withholds them when you do not.
