The 4th house

The fourth house begins at the lowest point of the chart, opposite the Midheaven, and it is read as the foundation: your home, your family, where you came from, and the part of your life nobody at work ever sees.

The first, fourth, seventh and tenth, which begin at the four angles of the chart. Traditionally the strongest placements: a planet here acts, and is visible doing it.

What the 4th house covers

The tradition also gives it one parent, though it has argued for two thousand years about which one, and gives it the end of life as well as the beginning. Both readings come from the same idea: this is the private place a life starts from and returns to.

It is one of the four angular houses, so a planet here is strong, and it is also the least visible of the four. A fourth-house Pluto is not something an employer would ever notice and is often the most consequential placement in the chart.

What an empty 4th house means

An empty fourth house is common and unremarkable. The sign on its cusp and the Moon's placement carry the reading.

There are ten planets and twelve houses, so at least two are always empty and usually more like six. An empty house is the normal case, not a deficiency, and the sign on its cusp carries the reading instead.

A planet in the 4th house

What a planet does here, one page each. A planet says what, the house says where in a life it happens.

Houses need a birth time. Signs do not.

Your Sun sign depends only on the date. Your houses depend on the horizon at the moment you were born, and the whole framework rotates by one house roughly every two hours. An hour of error moves half of it.

This is why a Sun-sign horoscope cannot use real houses. It counts them from your Sun sign instead, which is a genuine traditional technique called the solar chart and is an approximation. This site uses it for the daily, weekly and monthly readings and says so on each of them; the transit calculator uses your real houses when you give it a time, and withholds them when you do not.
