Pisces is described as dreamy, sensitive, and a bit unmoored: the sign that means well and cannot cope.

That undersells something genuinely unusual. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, and its principle is dissolution: the point at which the boundaries between things stop holding. Self and other, real and imagined, mine and yours. Everything the previous eleven signs built, Pisces lets go of.

What Pisces actually means

The core principle: dissolution of boundaries.

Pisces does not maintain a firm line between itself and what surrounds it. It absorbs the mood of a room, takes on other people's feelings as though they were its own, and can lose track of where its own preferences end and someone else's begin.

This is the source of everything good about the sign. Genuine empathy (not sympathy, but actually feeling what another person feels) requires the boundary to be thin. So does most art, most spiritual experience, and most of the capacity to imagine a life other than your own.

The second principle is acceptance. Where Virgo, opposite, tries to fix, Pisces accepts. Some things cannot be improved and only need to be borne, and Pisces is the sign that knows how to be with something without needing it to change.

The Sun in Pisces is becoming someone compassionate without dissolving into it.

That qualification is the whole developmental arc. The empathy arrives fully formed; the boundary has to be built deliberately, usually after some years of being drained by people who took what was offered.

Pisces Suns frequently find "who are you?" a difficult question, not from low self-esteem, but because the sense of self genuinely is more fluid here. The mature version has a self that survives contact with other people. The immature version becomes whoever it is with.

The Moon in Pisces is extraordinarily receptive.

This Moon does not have a reliable filter between its own feelings and everyone else's. It picks up atmospheres, absorbs distress, and can arrive home from a difficult room carrying something that was never its own. Comfort comes from retreat, solitude, water, music, sleep, and imagination.

Pisces is, in a real sense, the sign of endings, and it meets death with less resistance than any other.

Where other signs fight, fix, organise or reframe, Pisces tends simply to accompany. It can sit with a dying person without needing them to be comfortable, hopeful, or anything other than what they are. This is why so many Pisces placements end up in hospice work, chaplaincy, palliative care, and bereavement support, often without having planned it.

The sign's porousness, so costly elsewhere, is exactly right here. Grief does not want to be managed. It wants company, and Pisces provides it without conditions.

The difficulty is knowing whose grief it is.
