mutable air · ruled by Mercury

Gemini

Gemini is mutable air, and the tradition reads it as the sign of connection: between ideas, between people, between one subject and the next. It is associated with language, curiosity and an unusual ability to hold two incompatible positions without distress. Its difficulty is depth, since a mind that finds everything interesting has no particular reason to stay with any of it.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What mutable air means

air: Works through ideas and other people. Sociable, articulate, and inclined to think its way around a feeling.

mutable: Adapts to things. The end of each season, associated with flexibility and with a tendency to scatter.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Gemini from the other two air signs.

Six ways to have Gemini

Being “an Gemini” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Gemini

An identity built around knowing things and passing them on. Associated with wit, adaptability and a genuine interest in other people, and with a restlessness that reads as inconsistency from outside. The cost is that a Gemini Sun often has more beginnings behind it than finished work.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Gemini

Processes feeling by talking about it, and is not entirely sure what it feels until it has heard itself say so. Read as emotionally quick and slightly detached, with the traditional caution that describing a feeling articulately can become a way of not having it.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Gemini

Comes across as bright, talkative and hard to pin down. First impressions tend to be of somebody quick and sociable, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with a youthful appearance that persists well past the point it should.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Gemini

Mercury rules Gemini, so this is the mind unencumbered: fast, verbal, endlessly curious and easily bored. Associated with picking things up quickly, with talking in order to think, and with a scattered attention that gathers a great deal and files almost none of it.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Gemini

Attracted to conversation first. Read as somebody who needs to be interested before they can be interested, who values wit above almost anything, and who tends to keep things light for longer than a partner would prefer. Variety here is a requirement rather than a phase.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Gemini

Argues rather than fights. Associated with mental energy, quick reflexes and a sharp tongue, and with effort that goes in several directions at once. The traditional caution is dissipation: a great deal of activity and not much of it in the same place.

Drive, anger, appetite, and how you go after what you want

The rest of the chart in Gemini

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Gemini

Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini, which the tradition reads not as bad luck but as a large appetite in a sign that prefers small pieces. Associated with an enormous range of interests, a talent for talking, and knowledge spread wide enough to be thin in places.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Gemini

The work is with the mind and with being heard. Read as somebody deliberate about what they say, often privately convinced they are less articulate than they are, and unusually good at explaining something once they have genuinely learned it.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Gemini

Roughly 1941 to 1949. Disruption in how information moves. Associated with a generation that changed the way things are said and carried, and with restless, inventive thinking held as a shared trait rather than a personal one.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Gemini

Roughly 1887 to 1902. The ideal is the word. Associated with a cohort that believed in the power of what is written and said, and that was correspondingly easy to persuade with a well-turned phrase.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Gemini

Roughly 1882 to 1914. Power through information, and a generation that transformed how ideas travel. Outside living memory.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Gemini

Growth towards curiosity and the small question. Associated with learning to ask rather than to already know, and with finding that the local, ordinary conversation carries more than the grand theory did.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Gemini

The comfortable retreat is into information. Read as a habit of gathering, asking and talking around a subject in place of ever arriving anywhere with it.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Gemini

The sore point is being heard, and being clever enough to be worth hearing. The usefulness is a genuine talent for explaining things to people who have been made to feel stupid.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Gemini

What is not apologised for is saying it. Associated with a tongue that will not be managed, an appetite for the forbidden subject, and resistance to being told which questions are not asked.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Gemini

Read as ease found in variety and in talking: several things at once, a lot of people, and a day that does not look much like yesterday.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Gemini

Care is given in words and attention: asking, listening, explaining. It is received as being talked to, and felt as neglect the moment somebody goes quiet.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Gemini

The strategy is verbal and lateral: take it apart in conversation, find the connection nobody else had made, and think out loud until it appears.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Gemini

What is wanted is conversation: a partner who is interesting, who talks, and who does not expect the relationship to look the same every year.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Gemini

The devotion is to the subject: reading it, writing it, learning it thoroughly. Focus arrives in bursts and is total for as long as it lasts.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Gemini

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
