Chiron in astrology

Chiron was discovered in 1977, orbits between Saturn and Uranus, and is classified as both an asteroid and a comet. Astrology gave it the myth of the centaur who was a great healer and carried a wound that would not heal, and reads its position as the place a person is most reliably hurt and, because of that, most able to help.

How old this reading is

Discovered 1977; the "wounded healer" reading dates from the 1980s

Also called: 2060 Chiron, 95P/Chiron, the wounded healer.

Chiron at a glance

Chiron: what it is, its cycle and what it governs
What it isA centaur: catalogued as both asteroid 2060 and comet 95P
Discovered1977, by Charles Kowal
CycleAbout 50 years
Time in a signBetween about 2 and 8 years, because the orbit is very eccentric
RetrogradeOnce a year, for about five months
GovernsInjury, healing, teaching, the thing you cannot fix in yourself

Real objects that are not planets: a centaur, and four of the largest asteroids. All were discovered long after the tradition was formed, so their readings are modern by necessity.

What Chiron means in a birth chart

The standard reading is the wounded healer: the house Chiron occupies describes an area of life where something went wrong early and did not fully mend, and the sign describes the form it takes. The second half of the reading is the part that makes it worth having, and the part most summaries drop. The tradition holds that this is also where a person becomes genuinely useful to others, precisely because they never got to be casual about it.

It reads as more specific than most placements because the wound is usually recognisable without interpretation. Chiron in the 3rd is often somebody who was made to feel stupid and has spent their life explaining things clearly. Chiron in the 7th is often somebody who learned early that closeness costs, and who is unusually careful with other people.

Why the orbit makes the sign uneven

Chiron's orbit is markedly eccentric, which produces a fact worth knowing before comparing yourself to anybody: it spends only about a year and a half in Libra and around eight years in Aries. So a Chiron in Aries is shared with a very wide band of people and a Chiron in Libra is comparatively rare.

That unevenness makes the house and the aspects the personal part of a Chiron reading, more so than for most placements, and both need an accurate birth time.

The Chiron return

Chiron takes about fifty years to return to where it was at your birth, which puts the Chiron return between roughly forty-nine and fifty-one. It has become one of the better known modern transits, read as a point where the original injury is met again with enough distance to do something with it.

Unlike the Saturn return, which has a long record, this is a recent idea: Chiron has only been known since 1977, so the first generation to have a documented Chiron return reached it in the late 2020s. Treat the reading as young rather than established.

How modern this is

Worth stating plainly. Chiron was discovered in 1977 and the wounded healer interpretation was developed through the 1980s, largely by Melanie Reinhart and Barbara Hand Clow. It is not a traditional placement and no astrologer before 1977 used it.

That does not make it useless. It does mean it should be held more lightly than Saturn, which has two thousand years of accumulated observation behind it, and this site says so rather than presenting the two with equal confidence.

Frequently asked questions

What does Chiron mean in astrology?
It is read as the wounded healer: the point in a chart describing a lasting injury, usually from early life, and the capacity to help others with the same thing that came out of it.
When is my Chiron return?
At about fifty, since Chiron takes roughly fifty years to orbit the Sun. The exact age varies by a year or so either side because the orbit is eccentric.
Is Chiron a planet?
No. It is a centaur, an object between Saturn and Uranus, and it is catalogued both as asteroid 2060 and as comet 95P. Astrologers use it because the reading proved useful, not because of its classification.

Where is your Chiron?

None of this describes you until you know where your Chiron actually sits. Every chart on this site now includes it, calculated from the Swiss Ephemeris alongside the ten planets.
