What Mercury means in a birth chart
Mercury is the part of a chart that takes in information and does something with it. Two people can be equally sharp and have completely different Mercuries: one arrives at the answer in a leap and cannot show the working, the other assembles it in order and distrusts anything reached too quickly.
It also governs how you say things, which is why Mercury is the placement most visible in writing. The tradition gives it speech, commerce, contracts and short journeys, all of which are versions of the same thing: moving something from one place to another and having it arrive intact.
Never far from the Sun
Mercury never appears more than 28 degrees from the Sun, which is an astronomical fact with a neat astrological consequence: your Mercury is in the same sign as your Sun, or in one of the two signs beside it. There are only ever three possibilities.
That constraint is why a Mercury reading so often sharpens a Sun reading. A Capricorn Sun with Mercury in Sagittarius is a noticeably different proposition from the same Sun with Mercury in Aquarius.
Mercury retrograde, without the panic
Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year for about three weeks. It is an apparent motion, not a physical reversal: the Earth overtakes Mercury on the inside of its orbit and Mercury appears to slide backwards against the stars, in the same way a slower train appears to move backwards from the window of a faster one.
The tradition associates the period with revision, delay and things needing to be said twice. What it does not support is the modern claim that technology fails and contracts should not be signed. There is no evidence for that, and the calendar is not something to organise your life around. Treated as a prompt to re-read before sending, it is harmless and occasionally useful.
A birth chart with Mercury retrograde is a different matter and much more interesting: roughly one person in five has one, and the tradition reads it as a mind that reaches conclusions by going back over ground rather than forward across it.
Strength and difficulty
Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo and is exalted in Virgo, which is unusual: no other planet is exalted in a sign it also rules. The tradition reads that as Mercury being maximally itself in the sign that sorts, edits and checks.
It is in detriment in Sagittarius and in fall in Pisces, the two signs least interested in the detail. That is a description of a mind that works by impression and pattern rather than by sequence. It is a real cost when precision is what is wanted, and a real advantage when the answer is not reachable by steps.
