What it is
Four planets forming two oppositions, where the ends are connected by two trines and two sextiles. Drawn on a wheel it is a rectangle rather than a square, which is what separates it from the grand cross.
The difference is entirely in how the ends connect. A grand cross joins them with four squares; a mystic rectangle joins them with trines and sextiles. Same two oppositions, completely different reading.
How it reads
The tradition reads it as tension with a route out. Two oppositions supply the demand and the flowing aspects supply a way of working with them, which is why this pattern attracts far gentler writing than the grand cross does despite containing the same number of hard aspects.
What is associated with it is practical use of difficulty: the oppositions are not resolved, they are put to work. Sources describing the pattern tend to reach for the same idea, that the person has a method for the thing rather than a solution to it.
The name is unhelpful and comes from nineteenth century occult writing rather than from anything in the geometry. It is used here because it is what the pattern is called and what people search for.
Like the grand cross it is symmetrical, so there is no apex. The reading attaches to the two oppositions rather than to any single planet.
How common it actually is
Uncommon: 1.1 per cent of charts, about one in 89. Rarer than the kite and commoner than the grand cross, which puts it in the middle of the four planet shapes rather than at either end.
What to watch for
The name doing work the shape does not. There is nothing mystical in two oppositions and four soft aspects, and the pattern is better understood as the grand cross's milder relative.
